At a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday December 07, 2022, the government adopted the terms and conditions for registering carbon projects in the Republic of Benin. The decree creating the Carbon Projects Registration Authority was also adopted.
According to the Council of Ministers, the reforms and policies put in place in 2016 have improved the level of greenhouse gas emissions in Benin. To capitalize on these achievements, we need to establish a low-carbon development strategy in line with ongoing industrialization efforts,” reads the government press release.
By introducing the requirement to mobilize resources and reduce costs, carbon markets give countries and companies the room for maneuver they need to facilitate the low-carbon transition, the government pointed out. In this context, recent developments in these markets and the associated growth in demand for voluntary credit in emerging markets are leading to carbon regulation on a national scale. The obligation to include all existing and future carbon projects in the national registry will guarantee the visibility and quality of carbon credits generated in the country, and will help to ensure a comprehensive inventory of carbon assets, says the communiqué issued by the Council of Ministers. It goes on to say that setting registration procedures will establish a practical framework to help identify all carbon projects developed in the country. It will provide public and private developers with detailed requirements and define carbon law at national level.
